In My neck of the Woods

Hmm what to write? So much has happened since the last post on this meme.

My boy went off the high board at Swim Last Week!
The Boy Goes off the High Board–taken from my camera so you need to turn your head–sorry
My husband was ordained as  a Catholic Deacon. 257414_126314637450447_100002157345128_207496_6130005_o

and celebrated his first mass as a Deacon on Trinity Sunday, which was Father’s Day. IMG_5742-2

Pi at Cousin's Baptism

My oldest  (13) traveled to North Carolina to attend her cousin’s baptism.  My brother’s little girl. Whereupon she got to eat at a world class restaurant - The Angus Barn, home of an iron chef winner. Mom is soo jealous. I went to Macaroni Grill for Father’s Day. She had filet mignon and lobster tail with ostrich satay. I had overcooked lamb skewers. While Deacon G’s meal was undercooked.

Never a dull moment here at the Granola Catholic Home.

Thanks to Nana Penny for the picture of my Daughter. Nana Penny is my sil's mom. The type of  grandma we wish we all could have.

In my Neck of the Woods–Roaming from Home

We have a few dogs, 4 to be exact. Hey I live on a farm and have a big old farm house. So we have room for all of them and room for them to roam.
One dog in particular decided though to roam a little from home. Did I say a little? Well maybe not soo little is a better description.
IMG_2108This spoiled pooch. Let’s call her Vanna. As in Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune has a sense of adventure. On Saturday she got out early in the morning. You see normally we only let out one dog at time to keep the mischief down to a minimum in the morning. IMG_2096But somehow she managed to get by G when he was opening the door  to let out our other lab, Latte.
Her sister came back (the black one). She did not. We waited. She has been known to roam before. She did not come back. So we searched high and low, called neighbors, put an ad on craigslist. Monday morning we got a phone call from Animal Control –two towns over. They had found her. How she got 10 miles away from home we do not know. But she is back and her little girl is happy.

In My Neck of the Woods - Holiday Trip to Urgent Care

In My Neck of the Woods a holiday means something different. It means someone is going to get hurt/sick and need a trip to Urgent Care or heaven forbid even the ER, because even the Urgent Care is closed.  Yes they close early on holidays.
IMG_4806This holiday it was Pumpkin’s turn to make the visit. She was quite insistent about it too. She got an early start to the holiday trips too. On Thursday she looked like she had been ‘SMACKED’  with a branch across her face while romping in the woods.(1) Then at practice that night she tweaked her wrist doing back tucks. Possible sprain, but that is nothing new for her.  But wait that’s not all

(2)The red mIMG_4764ark on her face became this a beautiful case of poison ivy. So after church Sunday morning off to Urgent Care we went. Steroids for Pumpkin, to calm her angry face down. Her face swelled up so bad this pic is as open as her eye would get. But wait that’s not all
Because on Memorial Day, she was putting puppies in the house and closing the sliding glass door. (3) She forgot to take her finger out of the door and slammed it closed on her finger. IMG_4794-2Did you know that frozen vegetables make great cold compresses? I thought we may be making another trip to Urgent Care but after some ice –corn  and some ibuprophen she was fine. My Neck of the Woods

In my neck of the woods we decided to get a coconut.
 IMG_4430
It was a very pretty coconut.
My two youngest wanted to open it. So G know just how to do that. OIMG_4438f course it involved power tools. He drilled a hole it in. We tried to drain the juice/milk. But it was all dried up.  Now we had a coconut with a hole it in. But we could not open it. So what do you think my family did next? They did what any right minded family would do. They took it outside to throw it at the patio.

It was Moldy on the inside. Yuck!
Did I mention that I had bought this coconut before Easter?
So what did my kids do with the coconut? They gave it to the dogs to play with. Coconut Shells make great chew toys- they last forever. Well much longer than any other toy we give the labs.

Knowledge is still out there

IMG_3505

Recently I went to the Children’s Museum with Pumpkin. A great place of learning  for everyone one. I am a HUGE fan of museums of all types for all ages. While we were there I was pleasantly surprised to discover in the make believe classroom something I grew up with. Not just  something but the EXACT same editions.

Encyclopedias

IMG_3481Does anyone else remember these?  We had these two exact same sets in a reverent place in a bookcase in the living room, growing up. We had other sets too. But these two sets were the most used. Encyclopedias were not cheap. I can remember men, probably college students coming to the house trying to sell them. My mother got these at our local A & P grocery store. They would run a special each week and if you spent so much you got a book for a very LARGE discount.IMG_3482IMG_3483

Back then in the days before the internet, people relied on books for their information. Whenever we had a question about something my mother would say let’s go look it up in the Encyclopedia. Oh what great answers we found in those book. When I saw these books I had book envy. I am a bibliophile and I LOVE old books, especially those that remind me of my childhood. My little bit of nostalgia. I guess
